Bright Reef began with a simple observation: New Zealand grows some of the finest produce in the world, yet most families never taste it at its best. We set out to change that.

From Frustration to Purpose

In 2018, our founders spent a weekend visiting small farms throughout the North Island. They tasted tomatoes that burst with sweetness, lettuces so crisp they practically sang, and stone fruits that dripped with juice.

Then they went home and visited their local supermarket. The contrast was devastating. The same varieties of produce—bred for transport durability rather than flavour—sat under fluorescent lights, weeks removed from harvest.

That weekend planted a seed. Within a year, Bright Reef had established its first farm partnerships and delivered its inaugural boxes to families in Auckland.

The People Behind Your Produce

Our team includes former farmers, food scientists, and logistics specialists—people who understand both the agricultural reality and the operational challenges of connecting farms to families.

We maintain small, dedicated teams in Auckland, Wellington, and Christchurch who handle regional operations. They know the local farms personally and can answer questions about specific growers or products.

Most importantly, we are all customers ourselves. Every week, team members receive the same boxes that go to subscribers. We taste what you taste, and we notice when quality varies.

Our Farm Network

We work with 47 family farms across New Zealand, from Northland orchards to Canterbury vegetable operations. Each partnership begins with a farm visit where we assess growing practices, meet the people involved, and taste the produce.

Not every farm passes our initial assessment, and that is intentional. We look for growers who prioritise soil health, practice integrated pest management, and demonstrate genuine commitment to sustainable agriculture.

Once partnered, farms receive ongoing support including logistics coordination, fair pricing structures, and advance ordering that allows better production planning.
